How hot will a 30w soldering iron get?

Nick Henderson asked:

I appear to be having some difficulty with de-soldering on my laptops motherboard.
I have a faithfull 30w soldering iron but it won't melt the solder.
I have read online that solder mounts at about 190 degrees and a 30w iron should reach temperatures of about 450 degrees, so what could be the problem?

If you are sure that the soldering iron is able to quickly melt ordinary solder, the next step is to check that the solder on the motherboard is ordinary solder and not silver solder. Should the solder be silver solder, the 30 Watt soldering iron might not be adequate. I have never actually seen silver solder used on a circuit board. If the component that you are trying to de-solder is large, it might be acting as a heat sink and thus preventing the soldering iron from reaching it standard operating temperature.
